Film Poster Analysis

Unfriended

This is a film poster advertising the horror film Unfriended. The main colour scheme of this poster is black, white, grey and one line of text in red. These colours are very sinister and are those that are most typically associated with films of the horror genre. The one line of text, which tells the audience when the film is released in red makes it stand out more clearly against the rest of the poster showing its importance. There are a few fonts used within the poster. The ‘credits’ are in a small very thin font which suggests that it is not as important as the rest of the text which is in a large bold font and is made up of very few words. The main and only image on the poster is a close up of the bottom half of a girl’ face with TV static over the top which breaks up the image, this image is also where your eyes are first drawn to. Underneath the image is a google style search box with a few suggested searches which gives us an insight as to what the film is about. The poster is layed out in a rule of thirds type of way going down the page. The image takes up the top third of the page, the main title of the film takes up the middle third and the credits fill the bottom third. The text and images are fairly central which means there is a fair bit of unused space on the poster.

Poltergeist
This is a poster for the horror film poltergeist. The colour scheme for this poster is fairly typical for what is normally seen on a horror film poster. The colours used are blue, white and black with blue being the main colour featured. All of these colours are very dark which gives an eerie feel to the poster. The credits on the poster are in a small white font, they are also placed at the bottom of the page which indicates that they are not as important as the rest of the text and images. The main title of the film is in a large bold font with a white outline, this makes it stand out against the rest of the poster. The main and only image on the poster is of a small girl placing her hands on a TV which is turned on but showing no specific channel but glowing white, the image usually shows us something that happens in the film. The layout of the poster is very typical of a film poster with the image taking up the top half/ third of the page then the title of the film in a large font underneath and finally the credits and any other information placed at the very bottom of the page.

The Conjuring
This poster is advertising the film The Conjuring. The fonts used on this film poster are more sinister than the last two posters; this gives an eerier feel to the film/ poster. The credits on this poster are in a small white font, the same as the other two posters. The image used on this poster is different to the other two posters as it takes up the whole background of the poster. The image itself is of what looks like a derelict house in the distance and tree in the front of the image with an empty noose attached to it, the sky is very grey and cloudy and it is also very misty this sets the mood of the image and gives us an insight as to what is going to happen in the film. The layout of this poster is also different to the other two however it still follows the rule of thirds. The title is at the top of the page, the tree fills the middle and the credits are once again at the bottom of the page.
